With bad news filling the headlines at every turn, it’s no wonder we often look at strangers with suspicion. So, when Marc Walsh, a disabled Marine veteran, fell on hard times, he wasn’t holding out for any good Samaritans to come to the rescue. Incredibly, help came from the most unlikely of places.

Marc Walsh was walking home from the grocery store in Detroit when he realized that his wallet wasn’t in his pocket. He suspected that he had dropped the billfold, which contained his driver’s license, military ID, and a few hundred dollars, WJBK reports. With the loss of his wallet, the disabled veteran worried about how he would make ends meet.

“Really heartbroken, I really didn’t know what to do,” Marc Walsh recalled.

As a disabled Marine veteran who is self-employed, Walsh relied on every penny he made. Dropping his wallet was a stifling blow that left him wondering how he was going to get by. So, when he returned home after a fruitless attempt at retracing his steps, he was shocked to hear from his roommate that his wallet had been found sitting on his stoop.

Walsh checked the billfold. Unbelievably, everything was just how it had been when he had dropped it, including every dollar in its place. Stunned, he reviewed the footage from his security camera. Had it not been for the video, Walsh might not have believed how his wallet made its way back to his doorstep.

The video showed a pair of teen girls strolling up the walkway and knocking on Walsh’s door. When they received no answer, one of the girls pulled out his wallet and held it up to the camera before setting it down on the doorstep. The pair then left as quickly as they came.

“When I went back to look at the video, just completely shocked to see two kids that age being the ones to return it,” Marc Walsh said. “Honestly, it’s just really truly heartwarming.”

The good Samaritans were 14-year-old twin sisters Makhia and Makyla Vincent, who had stumbled upon Walsh’s wallet on their morning walk to school. The girls had checked the wallet for a name and had seen that it belonged to a disabled veteran.

“I read the veterans card and I was like I would hate if that was my granddad and that happened to him so I knew we had to return it,” Makyla said.

Walsh reached out to the local news station to track down the girls so that he could properly thank them. When the trio met, they embraced and even shed a few tears.

“It renews my faith in humanity it really does,” Walsh said. “I’m so incredibly grateful, so grateful and humbled.”

The teens have since been lauded by multiple media outlets for their honesty and compassion. However, they maintain that they were happy to do it even if they never received any praise.

“I feel really happy and grateful that I could help somebody because I know other people could have kept the money,” Makyla said.

After Marc Walsh united with the girls, he wanted to do something to show how much the deed meant to him. The grateful veteran pulled out a check for the exact amount that had been in his wallet at the time it was lost and handed it to the teens as a reward.

The girls prove that there are still good Samaritans in the world. They did the right thing even though it would have been much easier to keep the money. Their honesty should be celebrated, and they deserve every reward that comes out of it.
