Weddings are usually happy occasions, but that wasn’t the case for one bride. She was made to collapse into a fit of tears by none other than her new husband after what the Saudi groom did the moment she took off her veil following their arranged marriage.
Although it might be unimaginable to most Americans, arranged marriages still occur. One such wedding was taking place in the Western Saudi town of Medinah, where a Saudi groom left everyone, including his new bride in disbelief by what he did during the wedding festivities.
The couple had never met face to face before the ceremony, but they were happy to marry anyway since this is a popular custom in certain Middle Eastern countries. However, the wedded bliss would be very short-lived when things took a terrible turn while the wedding photographer was trying to capture the perfect shot of the smiling newlyweds.
Wanting to take a picture of both the husband and his new wife smiling, the photographer asked the couple to pose, then asked for the bride to lift her veil and smile for the photo. She obliged the cameraman’s request. Seeing his bride’s face for the first time, the Saudi groom recoiled in disgust, and things only got worse from there.
When the bride removed her veil and smiled for the camera, her new husband finally had the opportunity to lay his eyes on his wife for the very first time. That’s when he jumped to his feet and declared, “You are not the girl I want to marry!” In his fit, he added, “You are not the one I had imagined. I am sorry, but I divorce you!”
The obviously hurtful words immediately caused the heartbroken bride to collapsed in a fit of tears as panicked wedding guests stepped in to try to resolve the dispute and talk some sense into the new husband. Unfortunately, it was no use. The Saudi groom divorced his arranged bride on their wedding night after seeing her face for the first time, leaving her devastated.
News of the jilting was met with anger on social media with all the fury being launched at the groom. “He caused her great pain through his irresponsible attitude, and he deserves to suffer,” one outraged social media user wrote, according to Daily Mail. “He should appreciate that beauty is in the character, not the face,” the commenter added.
“Unfortunately, many young people today are interested only in looks and ignore values and morals,” the disgusted person’s response continued. “May God give her a better husband who will appreciate her for who and what she is,” the commenter wrote, wishing better for the bride.
“He is not man enough to assume his responsibilities. He is totally, completely insensitive,” another person added. “Nobody has forced him to marry her. He should have insisted on seeing her before the wedding and the engagement, and not wait until the wedding night,” they continued. “May he always be a loser and may he be deprived of getting married at all. He is not a man and he lacks basic feelings.”
This isn’t just a case of immediate buyer’s remorse. This involves a human who was hurt by the person who had just vowed to love her. Luckily, she’s probably the one who really dodged a bullet, even though she didn’t realize it then. Had she been the most beautiful woman in the world, it wouldn’t have mattered because looks fade. What would have happened to her when she became an old woman and was no longer visually appealing to her shallow Saudi groom?
The sad truth is that she would have been disregarded as garbage while her husband took another wife, as is also a popular custom in many countries where arranged marriages are still common. If anyone should have been disgusted by anything they saw that day, it should have been the bride who got to see how the man she had just married regarded women. He did her a favor by setting her free to pursue someone kind and decent.
