A young woman was convicted of killing her father in the most tortuous, prolonged way. So, when the judge freed her anyway, she decided to “celebrate” her victory immediately upon release from jail.
In a unanimous vote, a jury found 19-year-old Megan Imirowicz guilty beyond a shadow of a doubt of killing her father in a horrifically sadistic way. However, instead of heading to prison, the Michigan woman was granted release by a sympathetic judge, sparking outrage.
Megan stood before Judge Victoria Valentine as she was convicted in an Oakland County court for unlawful possession or use of harmful devices — imitation/irritants — causing death. Despite facing life in prison for such a crime, the judge would only sentence Megan to probation, allowing her to walk free after her father’s gruesome death.
Megan was arrested for causing the death of her father, 64-year-old Konrad Imirowicz, after five months of agony. The woman doused her dad with a solution of lye and water because he was intoxicated and, therefore, unable to drive her to her appointment at a hair salon. The young woman threw the caustic liquid, which is used as an acidic drain cleaner, over her father’s body after he passed out on the couch, The Oakland Press reported.
The substance ate away at Konrad’s flesh, leaving him with severe burns all over his body. When Megan’s friends discovered her father’s state, they called to inform her of his condition, testifying later that she simply scoffed and hang up on them. After calling emergency services, Konrad was rushed to Ascension Genesys Hospital several hours after the incident.
Konrad suffered excruciating burns and relentless infections as his body failed to heal. Eventually, surgeons were forced to amputate both of his legs. He then underwent numerous skin grafts, a tracheotomy, and kidney dialysis as his body slowly shut down. After more than five months spent fighting for his life, he succumbed to his injuries.
Megan Imirowicz showed little remorse in court, vehemently denying that she caused her father’s death. Instead, she called her father her “best friend” and blamed her brother for coercing her father into accusing her before he died.
Megan Imirowicz was sentenced to a year in jail with credit for 506 days served, meaning that she would walk free. She was ordered to complete five years of “intense probation” along with mental health assessments and routine testing for alcohol and drugs.
“I was shocked,” Megan told Court TV. “I definitely didn’t think that [Judge Valentine] was going to give me a chance but I was praying for a miracle today and that’s what I got. I was really happy.”
When asked how she feels about her sentence, Megan gushed over the judge’s leniency. She also reportedly celebrated her release by ordering chicken nuggets and french fries from a McDonald’s about a mile from the jail.
“I think that Judge Valentine is one of those judges that’s going to give people chances and I think I got really lucky having her,” she said.
Megan faced life in prison for the initial charge of killing her father. Despite never once taking responsibility for causing her father’s death, much less apologizing, she was given the deal of a lifetime.
Many feel that justice was not served. Konrad suffered for nearly half a year before passing away from his horrific injuries while his own daughter continued to unapologetically deny any wrongdoing.
