While a mother was home with her children, armed intruders forced their way into her apartment. However, as the gunmen pointed their weapons at the helpless victims, the most unlikely hero stepped in to save his family.
While Indiana resident Tamika Reid was completing her morning household chores, one of her children answered a knock at the door, KMOV4 reports. What unfolded was every parent’s worst nightmare. Within seconds, four unidentified men, at least three of them armed, burst in and swarmed the South Bend apartment.
“What you seeing was me ironing our clothes, getting our clothes, ready to start our day,” said homeowner Tamika Reid. “You would hear me saying, ‘what is that!’”
Most of us would like to think that we would summon up the courage to face danger in order to protect our family in a threatening situation. Of course, the reality is that many of us would likely react out of fear rather than bravery. Incredibly, one little boy mustered the fortitude to protect his family from unimaginable harm
According to ABC News, Tamika was ironing clothes on the floor when the men swooped into her dining area and living room, pointing their weapons at her and her children. The men quickly began rounding up the family, leading some into separate rooms, leaving Tamika helpless to protect her children. What the intruders never suspected was that a hero would emerge in the form of a little boy.
Without hesitation, Tamika’s 5-year-old son David sprang into action. The child began punching one of the men, relentlessly hitting him from behind in an effort to protect his family. She now refers to him as her “superhero.”
“I’m just, my whole thing was my hero right here. He was trying to hit the guys. My thing was I need to get him out of the house before they do something to my son,” she said.
The intruder shakes off David but soon realizes that the boy isn’t going down so easily. Determined to stop the “bad guys,” David reaches for the nearest object he can use as a weapon — his toy car. He then rears back and hurls the toy at the intruder, landing a solid hit on the man’s back. When asked, the child explained that he was just trying to save his mom.
“I hit him,” he said. “I tried to throw my car at him.”
Annoyed, the intruder joins the other men in the dining room but realizes that David isn’t giving up. The boy pursues him, unleashing a series of blows on the man until the group ultimately leaves the apartment. Miraculously, no one was hurt and nothing was taken during the invasion.
“This video is extremely disturbing,” said the South Bend Police Department in a statement accompanying the video. “You can see a little boy hitting one of the armed suspects as he tries to defend his home. It is our job now to defend him.”
“A lot of people are saying this little boy is so brave and he deserves a gold star and that’s true, he was extremely brave in this situation,” said South Bend Police Department Media Liaison Christine Karsten. “But no little boy, nobody in general should have to go through something like this so it’s really important we get those who are responsible for this heinous crime off the streets.”
In a Facebook video, Tamika Reid addressed the outpouring of support as well as the criticism she has received. She explained that, while she never wanted her son to risk his life trying to protect her, she is exceedingly proud of him.
“Who’s the superhero?” Tamika asks David.
“Me,” he replies.
“Who protected their mom?” she prompts.
The boy beams with pride before telling the camera, “I beat them up.”
The men reportedly fired several shots before fleeing the scene. Authorities confirmed that no one was injured. Tamika confirmed that police have identified the suspects. However, she and David gave some advice to people who find themselves in a similar situation.
“Nowadays it’s sad that when you see a group of black kids walking around, you gotta be suspicious and you gotta be cautious,” Tamika told social media.
“Call the ambulance and firefighters and police officers,” David says before adding that they should also “call Super David.”
Tamika and David have received messages of support as well as gifts not only from their community but also from complete strangers. David still maintains that he is a superhero, insisting that the bad guys were forced to flee because he fought them off.
While no parent wants to see their child put themselves in harm’s way to defend their family, David deserves all the praise coming his way for his superhuman courage in the face of adversity.
