A couple sat down on their hotel bed and heard a crinkling under the sheets. They quickly jumped up and pulled the hotel sheets off — and that’s when they saw it.
The last thing you want to encounter when staying in a hotel is something sketchy between the hotel sheets. All the stories circulating online about bed bugs and bodily fluids are enough to make you want to bring your own set of sheets when you’re out of town — or avoid traveling altogether.
Recently, a Reddit user shared a photo of something they found under the covers at a hotel that will not help to ease any minds. “Heard something crinkle when I settled in for the night,” the Redditor wrote alongside a photo of a note that was left in their bed at a Courtyard Marriott hotel. The note read, “If you’re reading this, then house-keeping did not change your sheets!”
The note went viral soon after it was posted, with fellow Redditors sharing their own hotel horror stories. “Found a used condom under the side of the bed once when I stayed in an extended stay hotel in Florida. Disgusting. Housekeeping there was a joke,” wrote one person.
“Had a friend find sh*t in the trashcan, like, literal sh*t. They cleaned it up when he complained, but the fact he had to be the one to find and bring it to their attention is beyond ridiculous,” commented another.
Someone else shared the story of how their wedding was very nearly ruined thanks to the incompetence of one hotel, writing, “Earlier this month, we had to change our entire hotel block for our wedding the day before. We were lied to that renovations were done, and when we arrived, quite literally everything was destroyed or covered in plastic wrap. The lobby was an unusable warzone, and the hallways were covered in dust and filled with construction materials.”
Today reported on several hotels whose cleaning methods were scrutinized after security footage caught maids slacking when it came to properly cleaning rooms before guests arrived. At one Holiday Inn, a maid was caught changing the hotel sheets but neglecting to change pillowcases.
“Housekeepers should change the pillowcases, obviously. That’s where you put your face. That’s what you sleep on,” former hotel housekeeping supervisor Jacob Tomsky said. “What really bothered me was that she put the pillowcase on a dirty chair prior to putting it back on the bed. That just gets it even more dirty.”
However, Tomsky added that “any human being is going to miss something here or there,” and he encouraged spot checks by management. “Management should stay vigilant and check and make sure that they have everything they need to do the job,” he said.
All of this is definitely enough to make you double and triple check that your room has been properly prepared when you check into a hotel. Unfortunately, you just cannot be too careful these days.
