After leaving the White House, Michelle Obama has been accused of attempting to launch herself into the celebrity world. After donning $4,000 designer boots and boasting, “I am a real star,” Michelle has garnered plenty of attention, but not all of it has been positive.

After leaving the White House, Michelle Obama decided to write a memoir titled “Becoming Michelle.” During her book tour, Hollywood celebrities hosted events to promote the former first lady’s book, like Sex and the City star Sarah Jessica Parker. At her Brooklyn book tour event, Michelle made headlines for her extravagant yellow glittery wardrobe.

“Obama paired a bright canary yellow wrap dress from Balenciaga’s Spring/Summer collection (not yet available to the public) with jaw-dropping over-the-knee Balenciaga boots, that retail for nearly $4,000, and are completely covered in glittering gold, statement-making sequins,” People Magazine reported. “Obama also seemed to be channeling Beyoncé, as she hit the stage…”

Michelle was treated as the newest celebrity “rock star” was her “surprise” onstage appearance at the Grammy Awards. “Michelle Obama made a surprise appearance at the Grammys, ” Page Six reported. “Obama, wearing a sequined Sachin & Babi pantsuit, appeared during the awards show’s opening, alongside host Alicia Keys, Lady Gaga, Jada Pinkett Smith and Jennifer Lopez, who all spoke about the impact music has had on their lives.”

The former first lady relished her “surprise” appearance and reached out to her mother via cellphone. However, her mom, Marian Robinson, didn’t seem too impressed by her daughter’s celebrity treatment. Michelle wrote in an Instagram post featuring screenshots of the conversation: “When your mom doesn’t think you’re a ‘real’ celebrity…”

The text chain starts with Marian writing, “I guess you were a hit at the Grammys.” Michelle responds to her mother, saying the text is “so typically you,” then asks if she watched the show. “I saw it because Gracie called me,” Marian responds. “Did you meet any of the real stars or did you run right after you were done?” she asks. Michelle replies, telling her mom, “I Am A real star,” to which Marian simply says, “Yeah.”

The Hollywood media offered their explanation for Mrs. Robinson’s reaction. “Moms are always keeping us humble!” Entertainment Online reported. One Instagram commenter reacted with, “Didn’t know she was a celebrity either. I thought she was a former First Lady.” US Magazine called it “trolling” with the headline: “Michelle Obama’s Mom Trolls Her Over Grammys Appearance: Did You Meet Any ‘Real’ Stars?'”

This wasn’t the first time Michelle Obama’s wardrobe caused a stir. The former first lady caused quite a ruckus while touring Italy by donning tops with exposed shoulders. This went beyond a fashion faux pas into what some called “blatant disregard” and “utter disrespect” for the Italian people and their culture.

“Not one to care about rules for commoners, Obama had zero respect for the dress code of the Italian Gothic church,” BizPac Review reported. The Catholic website Gloria TV headline read, “Against Church Rules: Michelle Obama Enters Siena Cathedral with Open Shoulder Top.” The strict guidelines for the appropriate dress are commonly known by those touring these cathedrals and holy sites. Michelle seemingly decided to ignore it.

also weighed in. “You’ll Never Believe What Michelle Obama Wore Into A 12th Century Italian Cathedral,” a headline for The Daily Wire read. “Michelle Obama showed no respect when she visited a 12th century cathedral in Sienna, Tuscany.” They also reported that the Siena cathedral website states, “No bare shoulders and no skirts or shorts above the knee” [which] “is the same as any other church in Italy, no bare shoulders and no skirts or shorts above the knee.”

The website added, “Siena’s cathedral is one of Italy’s greatest Gothic churches,” begun in 1196. There are also stories of tourists being summarily expelled from Italian cathedrals over the guidelines. As one Italian tourist site explains, “Entrance into Siena Cathedral requires a strict dress code. We cannot be held responsible for entry denied due to improper dress. Make sure your shoulders and knees are covered.”
