Oprah Winfrey was under attack after she made remarks defending Meghan Markle and Prince Harry. In fact, the African-American billionaire got slammed by claims that “she started this” and that it was time for her to make an “apology.”

Oprah Winfrey was blasted for saying she hopes that “burying the dead” will help Prince Harry and Meghan Markle finally make “peace” with the royals — months and months after the couple’s explosive interview with the TV host appeared to contribute to the Royal Family’s falling out.

According to the New York Post, Oprah Winfrey is getting heat for suggesting that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle can make peace with the royal family after the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Winfrey got candid during an Extra interview about her pal Markle and her husband, Harry, specifically regarding their strained relationship with his father, King Charles III, brother Prince William and sister-in-law Kate Middleton.

“This is what I think: I think in all families — you know, my father passed recently, this summer,” Winfrey began. “And when all families come together for a common ceremony, the ritual of, you know, burying your dead, there’s an opportunity for peacemaking. Hopefully, there will be that.”

However, Oprah was criticized for those remarks with the Daily Mail pointing out it was Winfrey who gave the couple her huge TV platform to air their alleged grievances toward the Queen and Royal Family, utterly unchecked. “They made a series of bombshell accusations, including that an unnamed royal raised ‘concerns and conversations’ about how dark Archie’s skin would be before he was born, and that Kate once made Meghan cry over a flower girl dress before her wedding to Harry,” the outlet reported.

“Now commentators are questioning why Oprah has re-inserted herself into the ongoing Royal Family saga given her perceived role in widening the divide between the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and the rest of the [royals],” they added. “Her words drew staunch criticism on social media, with many users accusing her of exacerbating the existing tensions once the couple had pulled away from royal life.”

“Oprah talks about ‘burying the dead’ and says she hopes it will help Prince Harry and Meghan ‘make peace’ with the royals. She’s priceless isn’t she,” one user said. “Never scrutinized a word [Harry and Meghan] said… She calls herself a serious talk show host.” Another quipped: “Oprah forgets she started this. Maybe an apology would help with the peacemaking.”

Social media user’s comments

Others blamed Winfrey for not pushing back on Meghan and Harry’s bombshell claims. “Oprah, you had plenty of opportunities to ask real questions and dispute some of the things said,” one user noted. “But, you didn’t. And trying to convince the public that this wasn’t choreographed to the nth degree? Come on, Sis. You can’t fool us anymore…” Some were plainly outraged: “Hey @Oprah if you cared for that family you wouldn’t have given them a platform to badmouth the RF family. After your interview, the anger between them widened. So stop the BS talk.”

“Oprah has a cheek, when she provided the platform for Meghan to trash our Queen and Royal Family – and encouraged her!” another comment read. According to reports, “Others simply poked fun at Oprah’s perceived hypocrisy, posting memes and gifs illustrating how the talk show host was now trying to ‘U-turn out of the drama she soaked and bathed in last year.”

The backlash didn’t end there. Following the Queen’s death, the hashtag #GoHomeMeghanMarkle trended on Twitter as she was accused of hypocrisy for making a public display of “mourning” the monarch. “Meghan Markle’s own father nearly died of a stroke and she hasn’t even bothered to call or see him…watching her swan around Windsor shaking hands pretending to be sad after making the Queen’s final years a misery is sickening. #GoHomeMeghanMarkle,” posted one Twitter user who garnered over 13,000 “likes.”

By March 2021, the public’s opinion of Prince Harry and his wife in Britain crashed to the lowest it had ever been after the interview. “Meanwhile, a separate poll — with part of it having been conducted before the interview was broadcast in Britain — found that support for the monarchy as a whole has largely remained unchanged,” according to Breitbart News. The Oprah interview was a pivotal moment for Meghan and Harry, and it backfired. Winfrey reopened that can of worms and it revealed many still aren’t ready to forgive the California couple for their alleged past sins.
