While riding a public bus, a girl called her brother and told him that an elderly man had sexually assaulted her. Moments later, the brother assaulted the man, leaving him with critical head trauma. However, despite an innocent man dying because of the girl’s false allegation, she hasn’t even been charged.
While riding a Cache Valley Transit District (CVTD) bus through Logan, Utah, at around 3 p.m., a 16-year-old girl called her 17-year-old brother and told him that 62-year-old Michael Fife had sexually assaulted her. As the girl probably expected, her protective brother would be there to avenge her honor.
When Fife had exited the bus near the intersection of 100 West and 300 South, the girl’s infuriated brother was waiting for him, according to KSTU. In a fit of rage, the teen charged Fife, slamming into him and knocking him to the ground. It was then that the elderly gentleman hit his head hard on the sidewalk.
As the suspect fled, bystanders called paramedics, who rushed Fife to McKay-Dee hospital. A few hours later, the girl reported the sexual assault to the Logan police, insisting that Fife had violated her body.
Since Fife was in the hospital in critical condition, police had their suspect and began investigating the incident. What they found was absolutely horrifying. Once investigators reviewed surveillance footage of from the bus ride, they discovered the stomach-churning truth.
In a disturbing turn of events, the footage showed that Fife had only walked past the teen girl to take his seat, never once touching her. The girl had blatantly lied about a serious crime, and an innocent man was now fighting for his life.
Just four days after the attack, Fife succumbed to his injuries. The elderly father died of severe head trauma caused by the male teen’s violent assault. Despite never harming a soul, Fife was brutally killed all because of a young woman’s careless accusation.
What’s most disturbing about the case is that an innocent man was slandered, a false police report was filed, and a homicide took place, yet no one has been charged. The police explained that, although they know both teens involved, they aren’t certain if there will be charges filed. Logan Police Chief Gary Jensen merely addressed the fact that they don’t want civilians playing the role of vigilante.
“We have a justice system,” Jensen said. “We don’t do vigilante justice. We certainly appreciate it if we could do our job.”
Fife’s son, Michael Fife Jr., is struggling to deal with not only his father’s untimely death but the damage done to his name. Understandably, he is demanding justice for his late father.
“I don’t even know why he was being hit,” he said. “Something definitely needs to be done because this stuff can’t happen. I mean, especially over an allegation.”
Fife’s loved ones established a GoFundMe page in order to raise money for the beloved patriarch’s funeral expenses. The organizer asked people to “help lay big Mike to rest,” while stating that all funds will go toward “the cost of hospital bills, cremation, and entering into a burial plot.”
“He cared a lot about people,” Fife’s son said. “He always greeted them with a smile and he was always a kind person to them.”
An innocent man was killed and his good name was dragged through the mud all because of a careless teen girl’s attention-seeking claim. Hopefully, the police will bring charges against these siblings and deliver justice for Fife’s grieving family.
