Seven months after getting married, tragedy struck a Georgia couple. The new husband was involved in a motorcycle crash and left in a coma. Doctors said to pull the plug, but his wife refused. Then, her husband awoke, uttering two unexpected words.
Matt and Danielle Davis were still newlyweds when their world was turned upside down. Matt was in a motorcycle accident after attempting to merge onto an interstate and striking an illegally parked vehicle. His body was sent flying in the catastrophic collision. He was rushed to the hospital, where he was put on life support.
Matt’s new wife, Danielle, remained by his side during those terrifying days in the hospital, as the love of her life laid motionless in a hospital bed, incapacitated and unable to communicate. Matt had fractured his skull and also broken his femur, several ribs, his clavicle, and his jaw. His liver was lacerated, and he suffered a traumatic brain injury.
Sadly, Matt’s prognosis wasn’t good and doctors soon said the words no wife wants to hear. Nine days after the accident, Danielle was told there was nothing more doctors could do, there was a 90% chance Matt would never again wake up, and his quality of life would never be the same. His doctor recommended taking the 22-year-old off of life support. Faced with the insurmountable decision of whether or not to “pull the plug” on her husband, Danielle knew what she had to do.
“They said if it was them, they’d pull the plug,” Danielle recalled, according to WTOC. “That’s what they’d want their family to do.” The decision for this faithful wife was easy — she refused to give up. Instead, she put her husband’s fate in God’s hands. “I knew that God could get us through,” she said. “I didn’t think it was too big for God.”
Matt was discharged from the hospital, still in a coma. Danielle brought him home, where she and her mother became his caretakers. Devoted to her husband and honoring her vows, Matt’s bride changed his feeding tube, made sure he was repositioned often to prevent bed sores, and administered the 20 medications he received daily, never losing faith that he would wake up, according to Inside Edition.
Days of around the clock care turned into weeks, and weeks turned into months, but Danielle’s steadfast devotion and unwavering faith eventually paid off when something miraculous happened. Matt spoke. It was just two words, but their implications were huge. “I’m trying,” Matt told his wife.
And, “try” he did. From the moment of his miraculous awakening, Matt made unprecedented progress. Three years after his accident, not only was he awake and talking, he could walk, ride a bike, and drive a car again. He even went rock climbing. He’s beaten all the odds, proving the doctors wrong.
But, his recovery wasn’t without its fair share of obstacles. Matt had lost 3 years of memory. He didn’t remember marrying Danielle or even dating her. Luckily, finding out the beautiful woman taking care of him was his wife was a welcomed surprise. “I saw her, and I was like, ‘Yeah!'” he recalled with a huge smile.
Matt attributes his inspiring willpower, in large part, to the dedicated woman he took as his wife. “You fought for me the whole time so hard,” Matt told Danielle. “If you really think about it, that’s the reason that I’m here today.”
And, there’s no doubt he’s grateful. Asked if he had a good day, Matt responded, “The main question is, did my wife have a good day?” When she assured him that she had, Matt concluded, “Then, yeah, I had a great day.”
Although she’s been praised for her perseverance, Danielle gives the credit to God. “The doctors, they know what they’re talking about, and it’s good advice, and it’s good counsel, but that doesn’t mean that they’re right,” she said, according to CBS. “If you believe in God, then believe in God — take what you know to be true.”
Matt agrees that God’s hand has been significant in his recovery. “He put her in my life,” Matt said, pointing to Danielle, “so He knows what He’s doing.”
“One conversation with Matt will change your life,” Danielle wrote on a crowdfunding site created to raise money for Matt’s long-term therapy. “He has a servant’s heart and a love for people. He never complains or feels anger about his circumstance. He just wants to make a difference and give hope.”
Danielle’s incredible determination and devotion have been blessed by God, who sustained her through the hardest time in her life and continues to do so. The message is simple, yet powerful: Never give up and always give it to God. Have faith in his plan and perfect timing — and always believe in miracles.
