Lori Ruff and Blake Ruff were happily married for several years and even had a daughter together, but Lori was always secretive about her past and particularly strange with her in-laws, according to New York Daily News. Lori told Blake’s mother and father that her own parents both died and that she had no living relatives. She also tried to keep her in-laws from seeing their grandchild, which caused problems in her marriage.

In an attempt to salvage their marriage, Lori and Blake started seeing a counselor, but they ultimately filed for divorce. Lori became more unstable after the separation, sending threatening messages to her estranged husband and his family and preventing them from seeing her daughter altogether.

Matters finally came to a head on one Christmas Eve when Lori Ruff was found dead inside a car from a self-inflicted gunshot to the head. Blake was devastated.

In the aftermath of Lori’s death, Blake began going through her things. It was then that he found a lunch box that contained several IDs with different names, as well as a birth certificate with a different name on it. There were also two suicide notes, along with other documents.

An investigation revealed that Lori Ruff was actually Kimberly McLean, who vanished from her home in 1986 at the age of 17. Her parents confirmed her identity after police tracked them down. It was speculated that she left home because she didn’t get along with her stepfather.

Lori first started impersonating other people in 1988 when she assumed the identity of a 2-year-old girl who died in a house fire. She took the girl’s name, Becky Sue Turner, moved to Idaho, and eventually changed her name to Lori Erica Kennedy. It was when she moved to Dallas that she met Blake and married him.

Lori Ruff’s sad and intriguing story went viral, with readers speculating as to why she ran away from home in the first place, beginning a lifetime of deception and lies. “Yep it sounds like the stepdad abused her and the mother didn’t do anything to stop it or at least that’s what the daughter thought so she cut ties with her too,” commented one Facebook user. “She changed identities to make sure the mother didn’t find her. However, the husband sounds like a wuss for not sticking up for her and letting his family call the shots.”

There are so many things that we will likely never know about Lori’s troubled past now that she is gone. The best we can hope for at this point is that her daughter is able to obtain the help that she needs to recover from losing her mother in such a brutal way at such a tender age.
