Baby Charlie was less than one week old when he was found abandoned in the bed of a truck in Florida, where temperatures soar. The helpless infant was left to fend for himself until a compassionate college student walked by the car and heard his feeble cries. When Charlie was taken to a local hospital, a nurse arrived who would change his life forever.
No one knows the story of Baby Charlie’s birth. No one knows who his parents are, what his medical background is, or where he came into this world. Absolutely nothing. All anyone knows is that Baby Charlie was less than one week old when he was left alone in the bed of a truck, dressed in a onesie with a blanket and a soiled diaper. There’s no telling when he had last been fed or for how long he had laid there in the car without the care of a parent.
Thankfully, a college student came walking by the pickup truck and heard Baby Charlie crying. Concerned, the student decided to follow the sound and soon discovered the infant all by himself in the bed of the truck. The student was understandably taken aback to see such a tiny child all alone in a car, exposed to the Florida elements. Indeed, this is something which should never happen. After making such a shocking find, the student immediately called the police.
When police officers arrived on the scene, they were stunned by the situation, as well. The officers summoned for medical help and Baby Charlie was transported to a local hospital. There, he was examined by a team of doctors and other healthcare professionals including Lorraine, a respiratory therapist, according to ShareTap.
Lorraine assessed Baby Charlie’s vitals and lung function, which was surprisingly stable, given his situation. The respiratory therapist said that he was “cold, hungry, and wet, but he was fine.” Lorraine then took time out of her busy day to sit down in a rocking chair and give Baby Charlie some much-needed attention and one-on-one contact with another human. The moment she held him, she knew God was sending her a message about the little boy.
Baby Charlie was a miracle, and despite the fact that he had seemingly been discarded by his biological parents, Lorraine knew that he had a greater purpose. She held him and instantly felt a special bond. She was drawn to this helpless infant whose future seemed bleak.
As a two-time breast cancer survivor, Lorraine could not have children of her own, although she and her husband had longed to have a baby for years. Lorraine had already raised stepchildren with her husband but had never experienced the infant stage. Deep in her heart, she knew what she wanted.
One week later, Baby Charlie went home with Lorraine. She and her husband decided to give the infant the most beautiful gift — they would give him a shot at a decent future by adopting the baby and raising him in a loving home.
As much as Lorraine and her husband have given little Charlie, he has added to their lives in the most awesome way, as well. Their story is an incredible testament to the tremendous blessing which adoption can be, not only for a child in need but for a couple who longs to be parents.
